How can we manage the new year with resolutions, messages for weight loss, and fad diets.
How to manage anxiety surrounding the New Year
It can be difficult when you constantly see advertisements for weight loss and new diets in the new year, but there are a few way to avoid this. One method I personally use is removing myself from the situation when I feel overwhelmed or as if I can't handle to conversation in the moment. Not to isolate myself however, but as a 2 minute break to reset and readjust to the setting and usually by that time the conversation has moved on to a new topic. With repetitive commercials it can be hard to avoid but by using coping skills, such as mindful breathing, a stress toy, and your 5 senses, you can lower that anxiety even just a little bit. With aspects fo your life you can control, remove them from your surroundings. For example, and ad comes up, switch channels, or if you're enjoying the show mute it grab some water and come back.
Reaching out to those close to you
In the New year, a good idea might be to reach out to loved ones for advice and support when times could be triggering. Having someone who knows what you are going through during this time can be helpful in avoiding conversations and having them as a person who can look out for you. If they can see you becoming distressed it can be a god opportunity for them to help you calm down or make a reason for you to be able to take some time to recenter.
Setting New Years Resolutions
Use this time as an opportunity to reflect on yourself, but don't try to set strict resolutions. Just because a day passes, does not mean you are a whole new person. Don't believe the markets New Year New Me! If you enjoy setting resolutions then try to think of some positive recovery focused ones you can set that will help you this year. However, if you ever struggle to meet those goals don't be hard on yourself; give yourself grace (you deserve it).
